VW Cup round up from Brands Hatch

It was a very busy week leading up to the Brands Hatch race weekend with the new build of a Golf GTI Cup car for Team HARD driver Howard Fuller. Following a very up and down season with a large amount of bad luck, it was decided a fresh start was much needed and time to prove ourselves all over again. We had no doubt that Howard was in a class of his own in outright pace in the VW Cup and that was evident in the debut of the new Awesome ( liveried Golf.

A shakedown at Brands Hatch the week before the race showed much promise in the new car. Next up was a solid Friday test day where we were sure that we were the quickest car on track and very much looking forward to the Saturday qualifying and race 1.

The Awesome Golf was to set the pace in qualifying with the first sub 1 minute 40 lap for a VW Cup car. Howard was to hold that spot right up until the chequered flag where he was pipped to pole by just 2 tenths of a second on the very last lap after sitting out himself for the final couple of laps. But we were still very confident going in to race 1 as we knew there was more to come.

The start of race 1 went exactly to plan and saw the Fuller/ Awesome Golf lead in to turn one. We were to hold that position starting lap 2 where an ambitious move left Howard in the line of fire from the car in 3rd place, locking a rear wheel and losing control and pushing the Awesome Golf off the track. A recovery drive saw us back up to P14 at the chequered flag and a very positive showing with a small amount of damage to secure fastest lap and a new lap record.

Race 2 would be a different story altogether. Starting P14 we had a mammoth task ahead to push as far up the very competitive grid as possible. A missile start saw us up to the top 6 within 2 laps and by far the quickest car on track. Lap after lap the Awesome Golf picked off the other cars with relative ease and was soon on the back of the leader. A very resilient defence was not enough to stop Howard taking the lead. Unfortunately that was short lived as contact saw the Awesome Golf off track briefly before rejoining now in 4th place. Still clearly the quickest car on track and another fastest lap and new lap record in the bag, we were now pushing on the last lap for a podium finish. This was looking very likely but disaster struck on the last corner of the race where being tagged by another car, we were slammed in to the pit wall and the car was completely written off with an almighty impact.

This was never going to keep us down for long and within 48 hours we have built another brand new car ready for shakedown back at Brands Hatch. Keep following us to find out what happens next as we travel to Donington Park with the new Awesome Golf to challenge for that illusive win.
