Rudds success in Spa
We had testing on departed the UK on Wednesday Thursday with the quali and races on Friday and Saturday so departed on Wednesday morning.
After the long journey we arrived around 7pm, had some food, played mini golf and then headed to bed for some rest.
The team had setup the day before so we arrived at the track ready to get going. We had 2 sessions and luckily the forecast was for sun all weekend. We had a good day which made us nice and confident for qualifying.
Thursday night is always great at Spa. The police block off the road and all the cars get to go down to the little village of Stavelot with the VW fun cup cars. Dad drove it down there, the team had some time to chill out and have a beer and then we headed back to the accommodation for some rest, ready for quali and race 1 on Friday.
We arrived at the track at around 8am ready for quali at 10:30. I went for new tyres to get us as far up as we could and after 20mins of hard work, we managed our highest ever qualifying, finishing P8.
We only had a couple of hours before race 1, so we had a quick de-brief and some minor setup changes before it was time to go again. The grid over in Europe is slightly different to the UK which meant that we started '1 by 1' (F1 style) rather than '2 by 2'.
I got a good start and went for the outside of turn 1; however I got shuffled out and ended up in 10th after lap 1. From then it was a pretty un eventful race for me, I was pulling away from the guys
behind but the gap was static to the guys in front - so after 25mins, I finished 10th. My first VW Cup top 10 race finish.
Friday night consisted of the famous TeamHARD quiz night with friends, family, team and sponsors all joining in... And, my team didn't finish last!
Once that was over, we headed back to the accommodation with everyone, had some food, drinks, a bit of play station and then headed to bed ready for the final race on Saturday.
I was starting P10 for this race and got another good start, holding position. As the race progressed, I managed to pull in the guys on front and finished P7 - another highest performance of my VW career! It meant a good haul of points for the championship, which was needed after some of the issues we have had so far.
After the racing, VW put on their annual BBQ, which we all enjoyed very much, before we all headed back to celebrate the results from the weekend. Some of us headed back to the track to watch some of the 25hour VW fun cup from the top of Eau Rouge - a great way to end a great weekend.
Huge thanks to the team, friends, family and sponsor that came down to enjoy the weekend with us.
The next round is my home track of Brands Hatch at the beginning of August and we will be looking to build on the results from Spa!
