BTCC welcomes Legends racer

Kieran Gallagher will contest the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship rounds at Knockhill in just over two weeks time, making his series debut in a Team HARD-run Vauxhall Insignia.

The Scotsman only gained his racing license a little over a year ago but has since gone on to complete a number of races in the Scottish Legends series. He made his racing debut at Oulton Park in 2012, but has turned more laps at Knockhill than every other circuit with the Legends series being mainly run at the 1.27 mile track. Still relatively inexperienced the 23-year-old recently made his debut in the VW Cup at Spa-Francorchamps, finishing a credible 11th in a Team HARD-run VW Golf.

“We’re living our dreams, so why not help in making someone else’s come true,” said Team HARD boss Tony Gilham after offering the seat to Gallagher. “It’s a one-off deal at the moment and we're realistic in our targets, but it would be great to pick up a points finish over the weekend. It’s a great opportunity for him to race at his local circuit and we're all very excited about it.”

Gallagher took a podium in the last round of the SMRC Legends Cars Championship at Knockhill last month, but even he didn’t expect such career progression so soon. “I’m improving all the time but of course this is just amazing,” he said. “A year ago I was just excited to be in a motor race, and then to be leading a Legends race was a great milestone too, but moving up so quickly to drive a BTCC car is unbelievable.”

“Knockhill was the main selling point and although it’s beyond my wildest dreams I won’t be racing just for fun. I’ve watched Jason Plato racing on TV for years and Gordon Shedden gave me one of my trophies last season, so for sure it’ll be a little surreal to be in the same race as guys like that, but I cannot wait and I hope to make the most of the opportunity.”

Gallagher will pilot the second RCIB Insurance Racing Vauxhall Insignia in a test at Brands Hatch tomorrow (7 August) before making his race debut later this month. The car scored points last weekend at Snetterton in the hands of American driver Robb Holland.

Rounds 19, 20 and 21 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship will take place at Knockhill on the 24/25 August.
