Brands Hatch VW Cup
Brands Hatch, my favourite track? Almost definitely. Yes Spa Francorchamp has a real aura about it, and Rockingham was especially kind to me this year, but nothing beats going local. Brands was my stomping ground as a 5 year old kid, hanging on to my dad round the paddock in complete awe of the cars, drivers, sights and smells. Little did I know that fast forward a few years and I’d have completed over 2000 laps of the circuit, won numerous trophies and even raced British Touring Cars there! You never know what your future holds, I’ve been blessed with such an exciting life!
32 cars in the VW Racing Cup, and I qualified in 11th spot. Not too bad, especially as my best lap was compromised in traffic. I felt really positive about race 1, and really felt that I could move forward. I did that, and moved up and down the order but come the chequered flag, there I was in 11th! A safety car mid race really spoilt my progress, but 11th was still a good spot to start race 2 from!
I was absolutely determined to have a cracking race this time, I was aggressive right out of the box and moved up to 7th by the second corner, but unfortunately my team mate, and long time dedicated mechanic Darelle Wilson was involved in an incident, and to avoid him I lost a lot of places and was back in 12th. Cue lap after lap of bumper to bumper action and I crossed the line in 7th place. I actually would have loved to of finished 8th. Reason being, I passed a stricken Howard Fuller on the final lap, who’d had a huge accident. Never nice to see, especially as he’d been having a stellar race, and was certainly due some good luck.
So there we go, I missed the rounds in Spa Francorchamp due to my sister’s wedding, yet I’m still sitting 13th in the championship standings. I guess consistency isn’t treating me too badly. Tell you what though, I’d love another podium!!
